Under construction! The required foundation repair of an 18th-century dwelling becomes an opportunity to deepen the basement and create additional living space within the existing historic urban fabric. By making use of the space below the house, the intervention offers a form of densification that preserves and strengthens the existing character of the city.

The circulation is reconfigured to give the new space both an internal and direct street-level entrance: the existing internal stair is retained, while the second doorway of the former entrance passage is redirected to a new stair. This allows the space to be used in different configurations over time, offering the family flexibility as their needs and stages of life change.
